Breaking the Fashion Rules

My fashionistas, rules are meant to be broken! (I am a certified rule breaker;))

In the fashion world, it’s hard to tell how much of this concept still applies. There are so many different rules about what to wear and what not to wear and it’s almost impossible to keep them all straight. But what fashion rules should stay and which are meant to be broken?  I did my research through this look styled by none other than me to let you know which long-standing fashion rules you should always follow and which ones you should toss.

Wear what makes you feel awesome!

Last weekend I sported this look to the Vintage fashion fair in Chelsea Town Hall. With this look I have (so called) broken three major fashion rules. Care to know them? Continue reading:)

The Rule: Don’t wear black and brown together.

One Time Fashionista Verdict: This has long been a fashion rule that’s made to be broken, as black and brown actually go together quite well. For example, how chic does it look when you wear black jeans, a black overcoat, and your trusty brown Chelsea boots? Or a brown leather skirt with a black turtleneck and black tights?

Why? Black and brown are both neutrals, and since neutrals go with everything, black and brown can definitely be paired together. I styled a black leather biker jacket with a LBD, black floral tights, a black floppy hat and paired them with a brown leather boots. This Peruvian pure Baby Alpaca woolen gloves-scarf set blended perfectly with the color theme- black being the dominant color of the scarf and gloves embellieshed with mustard yellow and brown hand embroidery.

The Rule:  Red lipstick is only for evening.

One Time Fashionista Verdict: At one time, bold beauty choices—a scarlet lip or a smoky eye, for example—were considered way too “evening” for daylight, but a bright red lip (or orange, pink, or deep plum) can act as its own accessory and liven up any daytime look. If you do go with a statement-making  red lip while the sun’s out, be sure to keep the rest of your makeup minimal, and your outfit polished, just the way I kept here with this look.

The Rule: Clutches are only for nighttime.

One Time Fashionista Verdict: It seems the after-hours staple is fast moving into daylight, as we’ve been spotting countless influencers using small strap-free bags during the day at Fashion Week, on various style blogs, and right here in London on any given day. While some are fairly casual, like oversized leather clutches, others are dressy (i.e., tie-dye or metallic clutches and beaded clutch bags), and all look fabulous with things like faded jeans, a dress, skirts and top pairing or jumpsuits.

Carry a clutch during daytime is allowed as they ook modern, minimal, different, unfussy, they don't pressure on your neck& shoulder, they force you to carry fewer items and most importantly, you need a change!
